The quest for the supernatural is, nowadays, jeered at. We study our grimoires of arcane lore, we who have taken up the quest, and we are labelled loonies and saddoes and whatever else they throw at us. The essence of our lives is pointless, we are told; useless, dull, silly, worthless.
Oh, but it is a hard quest, a trial of will, the exchange of the lesser pleasures of life for enlightenment. The exchange, aye, is a pricey one- the estrangement of the norm, the embracing of solitude, and the work, the never-ceasing hunt for the celestial blood that quenches our thirst... Folklore. Legend. Myth. How those words fascinated me as a child, how they enchant me now when I contemplate their full meaning... an enchantment which only you, fellow seeker, can fully understand- all those others, the forever jeering dimwitted fools, will never be able to comprehend the magic behind those words.
Folklore. Legend. Myth. The beliefs of peasants and lords long gone, cowering around the hearth while the elements rock the cottage to and fro, telling each other tales; tales of crawling, blood-thirsty creatures emerging after dark; tales of ethereal faerie folk gliding through moon-bathed glens... tales of magic, tales heard from grandmother, who heard it from her father, who heard it from a bard, who heard it from a mother... How many times was the tale told, how many shivers and laughs did it provoke, how long ago? Who really has the authority to say that, in the end, the tale is not true, when it has engrossed so much?
We seekers of the supernatural understand the true magic of the tale- and anyone who did would don the seeker's cloak, and go out and seek more.
If the quest is jeered at, it is because those who are not born to seek fail to understand that some of us are different. Maybe you, dear reader, are not a seeker of Folklore- maybe a scientist, or a linguist- but, if you are on a quest for knowledge you will understand what I am saying. Your Quest may be more understandable than mine, perhaps more practical or useful, but there have always been people ready to jeer at you because your treasure is knowledge, and not some earthly pleasure. Do not let them discourage you, do not let your goals stoop any lower than celestial Knowledge- for where your treasure lies, there shall your heart lie also.
For me, the Quest for the supernatural was a path that lead me to Philosophy, the Quest for Wisdom; the greatest of all Quests, and the most central, which all Quests will lead to, and which is so complex and valuable that I shall not utter it here. Take your own quest to the peak, and there you will find Philosophy.
So, if you are a seeker of Chemistry or Astronomy, go about thine own way. If you seek folkloric knowledge, settle here, make this your base, and we shall seek together.
The Supernatural is not the only quest I follow. I am also a linguist and a historian, and, of course, a Philosopher. As such, if you seek any of the mentioned eruditions, you will be amiable towards this blog.
Fare thee well, then...
Yours as Seeker,
